Can’t decide between the BlackBerry Curve and the 8830? Well, your final call depends on your carrier and what you really need from this smartphone. Both store pictures, videos, and music; have Bluetooth; can be used around the globe; support expandable memory; sport the great trackball found on the Pearl; and of course, offer easy access to multiple e-mail accounts. The 8830 lacks a camera, which makes it a lot more office friendly, and it has a larger keyboard. The Curve, on the other hand, can snap pics, and it's more compact and a bit easier to type on, thanks to the QWERTY keyboard. So who would find the BlackBerry 8830 just the right fit? In short, jet-setters who need a BlackBerry with stellar battery life that they can take to the office without hassle and use around the globe.

Call Quality

Call quality: We’re happy to report that call quality is decent – not quite as clear as the Pearl's but still quite good. For the most part, callers were clear and loud, and it’s easy enough to adjust the cell phone’s volume with the corresponding buttons on the cell phone’s spine. However, callers occasionally said they could tell we were using a cell phone. We also appreciated the speakerphone since we were able to speak simultaneously and callers weren’t cut off mid-sentence. Additionally, there was no degradation in call quality when we used a Bluetooth headset, and we could still hear callers clearly in a noisy environment.

Audio quality: The playback of music on the BlackBerry’s speaker is a bit inconsistent; some songs sounded loud and clear, while others were riddled with static. If you prefer to go wireless, you can always listen to tunes via an optional Bluetooth-enabled headset.

Ease of Use

Menu/phone book: If you love the BlackBerry interface, you’ll be happy to know not much has changed with the BlackBerry 8830 – but it is a lot prettier. You can use the included software to easily sync contacts, calendar, and e-mail between the 8830 and your computer. The BlackBerry 8830 comes with a mini-USB-to-USB cable so that you can connect it directly to your computer. Also, you can always use Bluetooth if your computer has that functionality; however, sending/receiving media via Bluetooth is a mixed bag.

Messaging: The reason most people buy a BlackBerry is for the messaging – and rightfully so. It really has perfected messaging, and now it has a built-in spell checker , which makes sending messages even easier. Even better, it’s extremely easy to set up multiple e-mail accounts on this BlackBerry. You can create up to 10 separate e-mail accounts, which can be anything from Web-based e-mail accounts such as Yahoo! and AOL to work e-mail. You can do it during initial setup of the device by following the prompts on the screen. If you already have a BlackBerry e-mail account and are simply changing devices, you can accomplish that in this menu as well. Also, if you tend to receive a lot of graphic-intensive e-mails, opt for an unlimited data plan, as downloading graphics can eat up megabytes of data pretty quickly. We should note that if you don’t configure an e-mail address, you can’t send e-mails from the BlackBerry. Our only real quibble with e-mail is that once you receive a message, while you can see who the message is from, you typically can’t read the entire subject line.

Pictures/video: Unlike the BlackBerry Curve, the BlackBerry 8830 lacks a camera, so you can’t snap pics or shoot videos. You can, however, add pictures and video to this BlackBerry by using the included USB cable or an optional MicroSD storage card; the cell phone will take up to a 4GB card. We were able to load a few videos onto the 8830 by dragging and dropping them from our computer onto an optional MicroSD storage card. Playback of video is OK, but not stellar – you definitely know you’re watching video on a cell phone.

Music: As noted, the Curve has a music player as well. Unlike with many other cell phones on the market, you can listen to songs stored in MP3 and AAC (Apple’s audio format). There aren’t many music-centric features included in the player, but it has the ones we’ve come to expect: Repeat, Shuffle, and Playlists (though you can’t create them on the fly). However, we should note that you can save tunes stored in your cell phone as a ringtone.

Connectivity/Bluetooth:You can do a lot with Bluetooth on this cell phone. Besides easily being able to connect to a Bluetooth headset (we found call quality was great when we used the Motorola H700), you can also use it to sync up with your contacts if your computer supports Bluetooth.

The BlackBerry 8830 is a true world phone, and you should be able to use it just about anywhere, provided you have service; however, we were unable to test this feature beyond U.S. borders. We should note that surfing the Web on the 8830 is a little better than Web surfing on the Curve, since this version has EVDO, which loads pages pretty quickly.

Design

Look and feel: With its flushed keys, slightly rounded edges, and shiny spine, the BlackBerry 8830 might seem slicker-looking than the smaller BlackBerry Curve. When comparing the two, the BlackBerry 8830 looks slightly more polished, while the Curve appears a bit more rugged. Of course, our favorite design element on the 8830 has to be that great scroll wheel from the Pearl, which is just superfun to use. Plus, the display is easy to view in most lighting conditions and really pops in dimly lit rooms. Unfortunately, like many cell phones these days, it attracts face grease easily, so we often found ourselves wiping off the screen. After a couple of weeks of everyday use, we found it attracted scratches and nicks a little too easily, especially on the phone’s screen; we highly recommend keeping it in a carrying case. Also, we should note that we are not fans of the voice activation button located on the left spine of the cell phone; we accidentally pressed it way too often.

Keypad: It’s amazing what a difference a little space between the keys can make. This is by far the biggest distinction between the 8830 and the Curve. We found the Curve was much easier to use for quickly typing messages, addresses, or even phone numbers, and we definitely attributed this to the minor room found between keys on the QWERTY keyboard. Conversely, the 8830's keyboard is decidedly wider, making more room for keys. However, there’s no room between keys, so they feel a bit cramped. Read: Even with our small fingers, we suffered quite a few misdials and misspellings (we sure appreciated the spell check feature).

Battery Life

We found battery life on the BlackBerry 8830 extremely impressive, especially for a smartphone. If you frequently make calls, as well as send/receive text messages and e-mail, the BlackBerry will probably last about two to three days before needing to recharge. However, if you consider the 8830 more a cell phone than a messaging device, you’ll get about four days of battery life. We should note that listening to music a lot on the 8830 will drain the battery faster, as will leaving Bluetooth activated. On the plus side, the BlackBerry 8830 will charge when it’s connected to your computer via the included USB cable, so you can leave the cable in the office and the charger at home. Nice!

After about 5 weeks, I turned in my "LG- Voyager" on 01/24/08, and purchased the "Blackberry 8830". I did this primarily, because of the functionality of the address book, and appointment scheduler. It also integrates with "Outlook". The total integration of the phone is "awesome". I miss the "T.V." option, as well as the "Touch Screen", and "Camera" that the "Voyager " had, but the Blackberry has better a "Navagation System", in that it doesn't freeze or crash. The "Roller Ball" takes some getting used to; I just have to slow down a bit, when I use it. I also like the idea that I can place the cursor on any phone number right in an e-mail message, or any "Notes" section, and press the roller ball to actually make a phone call! I can also go to my address book via the Navigator, and integrate that information into mapping, and communications. My Service Provider is "Verizon Wireless", which I have had for several years now, and intend to keep. Their service is fine, and the Blackberry Plan is great. The plan is so reasonable, that I actually thought that they had made a mistake. I had to double check with them to make sure that I was understanding it correctly.

Lets remember, we are here to rate the PHONE, not the service provider. You can get the same exact phone on at least 2 other service providers. I can't help but believe that the reviews on here are tainted with people's dislikes in their SP. If you don't like your SP, then switch, but don't rate the phone poorly because of your dislikes in your SP. I'll try to keep it simple... :-)) I broke down the phone based on my opinon below, otherwise just read this-- Overall this phone handles all business needs and I rate it 9/10 if thats your main concern. However it lacks in flashy features that come with a lot of the other smartphones devices that are similar so I rate it 7/10 for those who are just planning to buy the most expensive device they can... trying to look cool. What you don't know is having a BB is very expensive, you can't use it to its full capabilities without having a decent base plan and then having a DATA PLAN strictly designed for use with the BB devices. Those data plans carry a nasty rate (depending on carrier). Expect to pay $45.99 for your voice plan and $39.99 for your unlimted BB data plan. That doesn't include insurance etc... and you still have to pay for texting!!!!!!!!! Well that may vary depending on your SP, but as far as SPRINT goes... All of the above applies! Those who are lucky enough to get reimbursed for the rates from texting and data are in good shape (like myself). You don't have to have a data plan, but all smartphones would be sort of useless with out them... 1. COMMUNICATION 10/10 - This device as a means of communication is second to none. Compared to other smartphones I have owned, such as the PPC-6700, the BB8830's simple interface and messaging system makes emailing, sms texting, instant messaging and all of the above a breez. The voice comes in clear and the speaker phone is high end like the ones in Nextel's phones. 2. BATTERY LIFE 9/10 - This is probably reason number 2 why I even bought the device, if not one. Again, compared to a device such as a PPC, there is no competition. My PPC's battery life was terrible and continued to get worse as time went on. You can feel safe about leaving home without your charger if you own a BB8830. With moderate use, and by moderate I mean normal every day use, you get a solid 48 hours of use before you would want charge it again. And everyday use for me includes talking, texting, email, games, web browsing, GPS activated while using the built in maps. Great deal for some what heavy abuse right? 3. DESIGN 5/10 | EASE OF USE 8/10 - I like this device, but it is poorley designed in my opinion. With all the other phones on the market that cost this much, a touch screen would have been nice and because it lacks a touch screen, it makes doing some things a pain. This is where this phone loses to the PPC and TREO, but maybe this is why the battery last so long??? a) Web browsing on the BB8830 is somewhat lame and very boring but it serves its purpose. Having to use the trackball to scroll down pages makes me sick, I need to find out if there is way to skip down pages by half. Use of a stylus to select and copy things on the screen is amazing, RIM needs to work on that. b) The keyboard is small and thats because of the design. I really like the idea behnd the slide out keyboard. However, it doesn't take that long to get used to it, as with any phone. c) No camera, sometimes its just easier to take a picture rather than upload them. And since everything else has a camera on it, why not this? For the price jeez... d) The buttons on the side are just terrible. Poor location is the problem and the same goes for the charger port... that should be ont he bottom with a pull out cover. Good thing the hot button on the left can be set to do other things. e) Im not sure if there is one, but there needs to be an auto lock function. Other than those 4 things, the BB8830 is pretty much straight foward. The GPS is accurate, the device doesn't lock up and crash on you and it can do all the things the other devices can do. I suggest the main focus be the batterey life

I purchased 3 BlackBerry 8830's from the Sprint Website for my business. It took over a week to get the order in. Sprint charged my corporate credit card $700 but the order never processed. 2 weeks later that was cleared up and the order was finally processed. The phones arrived but the Blackberry plan was not what I ordered. I spent 3 days trying to get the Blackberry Worldwide Data plan but the Sprint rep in India kept signing us up for the wrong plan. We canceled the service and sent the phones back to sprint. 3 months later still waiting for our refund. WORST CUSTOMER SERVICE we have ever seen.

The BlackBerry 8830 features were average at best. The particular phone supplied to me would not engage Sprint web services and would not enable me to access personal email accounts. Sprint customer service to abysmal. I spent no less than 7 and one-half hours on the phone trying to get these and other issues resolved. Sprint's customer service and tech service was totally inept and useless. Service with Sprint was terminated out of total frustration. In my opinion, Blackberry would do well to end its ties with Sprint.

This has been a great edition to the Blackberry Family. I must say I upgraded from the 7520 (which was a good one too). First, the 8830 is sleek looking and more "up to date" It has wonderful battery life, and it is loud easy to hear when driving down road. Great edition, and good and job Blackberry "RIM".
